From my Adrants email that I received yesterday. (Will they have Baby Jesus cups next week?):
Starbucks Acknowledges Jewish Religion With Hanukkah-Themed Cups
What with every brand screaming MERRY CHRISTMAS these days (ok, not so much any more), it's nice to see one brand acknowledging the existence of a religion other than Christianity. Oh sure, all brands have gone the route of the all-inclusive Happy Holiday hoping to please all but that's about as far as they'll go.
This holiday season, Starbucks has introduced a Hanukkah Blend and is pouring it in blue, Hanukkah-themed cups. Over the next two weeks, Starbucks will serve the blend (in the Hanukkah-themed cups) for the next two weeks in New York's Jewish Neighborhoods, according to one barista.
Certainly, this is not the only instance of a brand celebrating Hanukkah but it's nice to see more experimenting with the idea.
Apparntly this was a hoax... Look at this story from Canada's National Post:
Rumours that Starbucks Coffee has released a special "Hanukkah blend" coffee and a Hanukkah-themed cup design are not true, a spokeswoman for the coffee giant said yesterday. The Internet was abuzz yesterday after an email showing a picture of a blue Starbucks cup decorated with white menorahs, dreidels and Stars of David claimed that:
A friend passed these along today after trying the new Hanukkah Blend at his Starbucks in the Upper West Side [in New York City]. Love the cup. The barista told him they were serving it at Starbucks in Jewish neighborhoods for the next two weeks. Good for them! I assume it's kosher!
Cute idea, except that no such blend and design exist. Said the spokesperson in an email:
We are dedicated to serving every customer regardless of how they choose to mark the holiday season. The holidays are a time for sharing traditions with friends and family. Our to-go cups turn red each year during the holiday season. For our customers celebrating Hanukkah, we offer a selection of Hanukkah themed merchandise including mugs and tumblers. We do not offer Hanukkah blend coffee, nor do we carry blue to-go cups in our stores.
Quick word of advice to the mastermind behind this particular holiday prank: call Starbucks and sell them on your idea. If online interest in the idea of a Hanukkah blend means anything, you'll be having a very happy (or at least well-financed) holiday indeed.
